The origin of the M65 field coat can be traced back to the Allied forces led by the U.S. Army in World War II. Since the Normandy landings, they began to attack the German army, resulting in a field coat—the M-1941 field jacket. At that time, the field coats and service uniforms of most armies such as the British army and the German army were the same. Only the US military separated the two kinds of uniforms earlier and established their own uniform system according to the needs of their respective duties to minimize the inconvenience when wearing them. . Later, because army officers reported that the cotton/wool blended M-1941 jacket was too fragile and easy to wear, and then gradually improved and developed a new generation of field jackets. The M-1943 jacket produced in the post-war period was made of cotton, and its texture was more advanced and stronger than that of the M-1941, and it was designed with a weather cap. The appearance was quite similar to the M65 field jacket. Not long after the end of World War II, the Korean War broke out. In order to meet the needs of the war, the US military added an inner lining design to the M-1943 jacket to improve the cold resistance of the field jacket, which became the prototype of the later M-1951 field jacket.
The style of the M-1951 jacket basically continues the design of the M-1943 jacket, but the front of the jacket has been changed to a zipper closure for excellent wind resistance. Then, the M-1965, the M-65 field coat with a hood hidden in the collar, was introduced, and the collar and cuffs were replaced by Velcro. Since then, the M65 has become the standard equipment for garrisoned troops all over the United States.
